I love NHTI’s cross country coach, Tom Walton. I once searched his name online and found a comment he had posted on a blog post about how he wants to turn Concord, New Hampshire into one of the fittest cities in America. He was looking for inspiration on how to do that. I think he actually wants to turn all of New Hampshire into one of the fittest States, so why not start with the State Capital.
This was the second race I had run in that he had organized (the first being the 4th down and 4(miler) in February). I continued to be impressed by him. Not only as he very helpful before the race (asking if I needed anything) but he’s just such a character during the award ceremony. He actually gave out awards to people that he knew where running a race for the very first time. I found that touching.
He also seems quite supportive of the Clydesdale/Filly category. Most of his races seem to include awards for heavier runners.
If you ever get a chance to run one of his races I absolutely recommend it. I want him to stay inspired and continue on his quest for a fitter, healthier State.

My Half marathon personal record (set in my first half marathon, Half at the Hamptons) was actually only a little slower on the pace from my 5k personal record pace. And I have a goal to break 8 minute miles on a 5k this year. So I was really hoping for a good race.
I showed up at NHTI, did a warm up with Cooper (I was bringing him to the dog park afterwards) and started the race. I had a good time. For the first mile I ran with a girl who used to be a division I track athlete who like me had gotten out of shape once she was done with her sport. Then she realized she could go faster and I let her go.
Turns out she finished about about a minute ahead of me, winning Filly division. A category under which I came third. I was really excited about actually placing in Filly. The category is always full of talented women who just happen to be tall or muscular
We promised to find each other on Facebook, but I can’t find her and I wonder if she’s having a hard time finding me (my last name might mess with the search algorithms). So Chelsea, if you are reading this, contact me! I would love to have another running buddy.
