Today I had the privilege of running with a truly incredible individual. And you can too.
Lisa Smith Batchen is running 50 miles in 50 states in 62 days to raise money for millions of children. That’s an ultra marathon in every state. She’s traveling America with her support crew and her friend Sister Mary Beth Lloyd.
Lisa is a world class Ultramarthoner. I’m familiar with the World of the Ultramarathon through my husband and because I’m training for a 50k in May. What Lisa has achieved is simply amazing to me, she’s set the course record for the Badwater Ultramarathon in the past. You can read more about her achievements here.
But what was much more impressive to me was her personality. She’s wonderful and friendly, encouraging and humble. If you get the chance to join her when she runs your state I would absolutely recommend it. I only had time to run a couple laps with her, but she has inspired me in a way that makes all my goals seem possible.
On a short side note, Sister Mary Beth is also incredible. She was doing loops in her full habit: a black wool tunic over a white shirt and underskirt, black headpiece and a black woolen belt. The rest of her outfit is sneakers and a waterbottle holder. I didn’t take the time to join her, but she seems like a wonderful joyful woman as well, working so hard to help the orphans.
In order to reach her goals, Lisa is running loops at each state and is mostly run – walking. If you can run for short distances at a time you can join in with her. The loop in Boston was less than 1.6 miles around Jamaica Pond.
While Lisa runs her loops at her pace. She encourages everyone that joins her to run loops on their own if their workout plans call for it.
I’d like to thank my friends Jana and Keith for letting me know that she was running in Boston. I know that Keith was also very inspired by running with her.

Miriam ~ thanks for joining in my journey of life via the soles of my feet. I loved this post. I had read about Lisa and knew she was going to be in State College PA on the 29th – the same day as the closing on our house in VA so I won’t be able to run with her. Big disappointment.
What 50k are you training for in May? Congrats on taking on the challenge. You will enjoy the experince!

I’m running the 50k at Pineland Farms in Maine. My husband is running the 50miler. My goal is to finish before he does. Hopefully with 19 miles less it should be possible.
