After two weeks consisting of constant school or work work, and a whirlwind weekend in Virginia, I had grand ideas of what I would be doing running wise this weekend.
- I had to get up early on Saturday I was going to run a half marathon distance at least.
- I would do a nice run trail run on Sunday.
- I would be witty and charming for my parents, they had come down from Canada to see me for the weekend.
- I would have a clean house by the end of the weekend.
Turns out, when I’m sleep deprived none of those things happen (Ok maybe I was charming enough for my parents). I got up early to do the task I needed to do, but it was too dark to take the dog with me on the run. So I put my head down for a minute, and woke up hours later.
I could have gone for my run as planned, but I wanted to spend time with my parents and I was so tired that any excuse would have been appropriate.
As I was driving back from getting some breakfast and I kept seeing signs for a race in my town. So I called my parents and asked if they cared if I ran a little 5k.
Race: Candia PTO 5k
Date: May 22, 2010
Distance: 5k
Location: Candia, NH
I wasn’t ready for a 5k but I wanted to help out the town’s parent teacher organization. Once I learned the route I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep helping. The route took a right out of the school parking lot and went straight up the biggest hill in Candia for 1/2 mile. It wouldn’t have been a big deal but I was tired, very tired and going up that hill just killed me. I learned quickly that I don’t do well when sleep deprived and short on training.
My legs felt like lead as I ran the rest of the course. I felt like my legs were just going through the motions. But I liked the course, it took me through a nice sampling of my towns roads. And I love my town.
Despite feeling terrible I didn’t do too poorly. I finished the race 26:42 finishing 35th out of 87 runners. The full results are here.
Post race I was able to pet my pup and hang out with my parents, which was a nice novelty. I usually do the 5ks by myself and talk to strangers after the race.
I’m hoping to get back to blogging this week. I have so much to talk about. Being part of the crew at my husband’s Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 miler, preparations for my own ultra, running in Virginia myself, and some more running skirts/skorts review. We are getting into the homestretch of my giveaway, so don’t forget.
What is new with you? What have I missed in the last few weeks?
