My hubby participated in his third 100 miler this weekend when he attempted the Vermont 100. While he finished the race last year in less than 23 hours. This year was a reminder that 100 miles is a tough distance.

After running the first 88+ miles at a blazing pace, he dropped at mile 95.5, the last handler station. His quad was giving him sharp pain on impact and he didn’t want to do further damage to the leg. Considering how close he was to the finish, he must have been in significant pain.
He did do very well while he was able to run. The weather was warm but beautiful and the course was dry.

His friend Mats paced for him from 70.1 miles into the race. Mats had all sorts of therapeutic remedies for Adam’s leg pain. He was the right pacer for the race conditions.
The race was a reminder that sometimes when you push yourself to aim for a tough goal you don’t always succeed. I think he was glad to have pushed his limits, even if the attempt failed.

Our friend Larisa finished her first 100k. She did it in 14 hours and 36 minutes earning her 2nd place in the womens’ division for the 100k race.
I posted a ton of pictures from the day. Most of the pictures are from the front runners and some of the 100 km runners. They are straight out of camera. Feel free to use the pictures with credit. The set on Flickr can be found here.

WOW! 100 mile races?? I can’t even imagine riding 100 miles on my bike, much less running that far!
Very cool that he kept going and did 88 miles in spite of the pain he must have been in. Better to save it for another day than to push on and risk further injury.
Way to go, Adam!

Sorry to hear about the DNF. Tough year for many runners. Kudos on the incredibly strong effort, though. Best, ESG/Ron
