Hiking Mount Washington

Cooper and I on Washington

I had intended for this post to be quite picture heavy and I had taken a lot of pictures with my cell phone to support what was going to be a pretty wordy report. But my laptops have decided to be difficult trapping the pictures on one, and making typing difficult on the other.

Our household has been hiking for years. New Hampshire is home to 48 summits over 4000ft tall, and there is a list people complete to get a patch and be part of a club. Adam and I both finished that list years ago.

Hiking is important to us, it’s how we relax, it’s how we met. So when we got Cooper it was one of the things we wanted to do with him. So we have slowly but surely been working on the 48 with him.

Saturday we hiked to the top of New Hampshire’s tallest mountain. At 6388ft it may not be tall by West coast standards, but it is rugged. Its nickname is the rock-pile.

Adam was rock climbing with his friend Courtney so they joined us for the first part of our hike. As we left Pinkham Notch we ran into two big moose hanging out behind the Visitor Center buildings.

Moose 1

The moose did not have antlers like this one that my parents saw while on vacation in Algonquin recently.

We hiked up the very eroded trail and headed up Lion Head trail. As we got above treeline the views were exceptional. I loved the clouds peaking in and out of the valley. I took the Alpine Garden trail to get some pictures of alpine flowers. That’s where Cooper and I saw a tiny Bear cub. No mama to be seen.

I guess there’s been problems with aggressive bears in the Mount Washington area lately.

We finished the hike up. Cooper is so agile he makes me feel slow. We got to the top before most of the Cog railway and auto road traffic showed up. And we started to head down. Because I was concerned about the impact on my leg I chose the Tuckermans Trail.

It was a circus. There was so many people they could have linked hands. I wrote a post on BlondePoodle about some of the things we heard from people heading up the trail.

The Tuckerman’s ravine waterfall was quite lovely to see and we joyfully and uneventfully headed back down the trail.

Best part, some sore muscles but no tibia pain.

Miriam the Filly Runner
I'm a 28 year old ex-Northeastern-rower who is finding a new love for physical fitness in the form of running. I love running long distances (even aiming for Ultramarathons) on both road and trail. I've toyed with barefoot but mostly go with the minimalistic shoes. I may not be very fast, but I'm enjoying competing against myself. I'm Canadian but love living in New Hampshire with my hubby, and our Poodle and cats. When not running, I'm usually being a nerdy engineering type.

Cooper the Blonde Poodle
Cooper, who's registered name is French Fries and Gravy, is a 1 year old Cream Standard Poodle (he's on the small side of his breed). He thinks that living with two runners is fantastic, as long as he gets to tag along. His longest run to date has been 22 miles off leash, so he probably did significantly more than that. Coop's non-running adventures are often documented in my other blog Life with a Blonde Poodle.
